The Olympic Torch Relay!!!

On Wednesday 30th May the Olympic Torch passed through Shrewsbury and all of our school, (Greenfields) went to watch it. The atmosphere was amazing with almost 40,000 people around the town. We waited for about an hour for this exciting moment. Before the torch came past, there were lots of police, Olympic Vehicles and a few other runners in front. There was a girl named Chloe who ran with the Torch after the coaches. This experience was a once in a life time chance for some of the pupils in Greenfields.

Many children have said they enjoyed this trip and would love to see it again, (especially when they were giving out free flags and coke). Our school was so close to being on TV but missed, anyway, we all enjoyed it and so did the teachers!

  1. That sounds like an amazing experience! I can't imagine how exciting it would be to see the Olympic torch pass by. Canada hosted the Olympics in 2010 but my town was too far away to watch them.

We even got to touch the torch too!

  8. At our school, a man called Steve Watson (who was an 'Olympic Torch Bearer'this year, came to our school;along with the gold torch itself. He told us how he got nominated to carry the Olympic Torch and how many holes it has in it (8000 for the 8000 people carrying it). Amazingly, we got to touch the torch and when I did, my hands felt 'holy' and don't ask me why! why? Well techniqually when you have touched something that is very famous and probably wont be in your country ever again, it's very rare to touch it.

  16. It is very exciting to see the torch in person. In the winter of 2010 Vancouver hosted the Olympics and the torch was carried through our small community on Vancouver Island, BC. Several students in our school (a whole hockey team) and community members were involved in the torch relay. This link http://sarahjane.edublogs.org/2010/02/07/interview-of-a-torch-bearer/ is an interview with a boy who was in Grade 6 who got to carry the torch. He got to keep his torch that he carried.
I think it is interesting that the torch is so unique for each Olympics. The metals for the 2010 Olympics were designed by a First Nations artist from our community https://www.google.ca/search?q=2010+winter+olympic+medals&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=tHH&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=mq3cT9e4GOKo2wX_opSlDQ&ved=0CG4QsAQ&biw=1276&bih=627 In fact my wedding band was made by the same artist. What does the metal design look like for these Olympics?
